Stasis

This poem came about when Chris described himself as a teenaged drug dealer.  He didn’t want anyone’s help or concern any more.  He used his anger to help him survive.

Rage held me together

Soldered the broken places

Backburned a barrier

Scorched earth perimeter

Hate held me together

Expanded like an atmosphere

Filled up the vacuum

Pressurized the capsule

Cold held me together

Freezing the life inside me

Deadened my mind and heart

Looked out from behind my eyes

Loss held me together

Leaving no more to lose

Emptiness was peace

A foretaste of death

Hope is like acid

Corroding my defences

Eating me alive

And when that is done

What will you offer

To hold me together?
